Institute
The Institute of European Art History (IEK) is a centre for the methodologically diverse research and teaching in the history of art and architecture, covering specialist subject areas that include new media and popular culture. A shared interest in cultural and historical contextualisation is at the heart of the Institute's work.

Studies
The discipline of European Art History examines the history of the visual arts, architecture, the applied arts, photography, and new media in Europe, as well as transcultural interconnections, from the early Middle Ages to the present day.

Research
The research conducted at the IEK covers a broad range of historical, material, and methodological specialisms – from gender studies and cognitive science to theoretical and iconographic approaches. Through participating in research and curatorial projects at the Institute, students are able to gain valuable insights into the processes of research and inspiration for their own work.

Outreach
Art and society are closely interconnected—which is why we believe it is essential to use art as a catalyst for dialogue, bridging the gaps between research, teaching, and the public. To this end, the Institute regularly organizes events open to the public such as exhibitions, a themed series of film screenings, and other events. Members of the Institute work to make their research accessible through lectures, publications, and media appearances.

Heimatfilm Transnational
